To the millions of single women in the nation, whose love cells have dried solid, don’t give up yet. Who knows? A new romance might start as your destiny changes today.
The scene switches to Ban Ji Yeon on a bike being chased by Yoon Dong Ha in a Santa Claus outfit. Dong Ha yells at Ji Yeon that she needs to return the bike. How far is she planning on going? Ji Yeon keeps ignoring him; she apparently has a mission to accomplish and why should she stop for a fake Santa in the middle of the month of March?
REWIND (3 HOURS BEFORE)
Ji Yeon meets with her colleague Yong Shik and both are dressed in their old school uniforms from 15-20 years ago. Surprisingly the uniforms fit except for the buttons that keep popping out…
Ji Yeon and Yong Shik head to a high school that the famous actor Kim Jeong Do is visiting. Jeong Do is respectable – perfect husband, great actor, socially involved, and charitable. Yet, under the perfect appearance it turns out that Jeong Do has a common law wife (Why just not call her a mistress, which she technically is…). This could be another big scoop for their magazine Trouble Maker (Love the title ~).
The high school Mr. Cheater/Actor is visiting is where his mistress works. The mistress even brought their daughter to see her father today.
At the same high school, our male lead Dong Ha is giving a self-defense lesson to a group of high schoolers. When Dong Ha and his friend Yong Soo Chul are about to leave, they are intercepted by the school’s security guard. The guard wants to thank them; he learned so much from their self-defense lesson. While the three are talking, Ji Yeon and sneak in.
Ji Yeon and make their way on the rooftop of the school and are able to spot Jeong Do and his family. Pictures of the three are quickly taken for evidence.
Jeong Do is happy to see his daughter Yoon Ji. At least, he pretends to be. The truth is he hasn’t been visiting his second family for three months. He has greater aspirations – political ones – and doesn’t want his second family to ruin his reputation. Jeong Do asks his mistress to leave the country for a few years. If she ruins his career, he will not forgive her. Plus she is the one who wanted to keep the child (What a jerk…)
Ji Yeon and Yong Shik are leaving when the security guard starts purchasing them on the roof. He heard that they were so perverts taking kinky pictures around there. He asks for the camera.
Ji Yeon: “We are students.”
Guard: “If you two are students, I am G-Dragon!”
The guard chases after them. Our two fake students make it to the gate, which is closed. Yong Shik holds on to the guard while Ji Yeon climbs the gate. The guard remembers Dong Ha’s self-defense lessons and applies the moves. Young Shik is in pain, but Ji Yeon successfully escapes.
Ji Yeon struggles to find a taxi cab. She quickly blames it on White Day and all the couples trying to get a cab. She calls the office to ask them to prepare the necessary for the scoop. The intern she calls, Eun Chae, is too busy playing around and doesn’t hear a word.
Ji Yeon’s co-workers wonder where she is. Ji Yeon aka The Witch is always doing whatever she wants without caring about… Team Leader Byun, who seems the most bitter, has his rant quickly interrupted by the arrival of their big boss. If Ji Yeon is not here it’s probably because she is hardly working.
Dong Ha is playing Santa Claus for a day and entertaining a group of children.
The children are about to receive their gifts when Ji Yeon ruins it all. She takes the bike and gives one of the children money for it. She is immediately pursued by Dong Ha and a group of children through the streets of Seoul.
Team Leader Byun is still bad mouthing Ji Yeon in front of their boss. Ji Yeon has no respect for order and teamwork. The other co-workers think the same thing, but are too afraid to speak up.
Ji Yeon barges in the meeting room still wearing her ridiculous school uniform. Everyone is shocked. What the hell is she wearing?!
Her outfit is quickly forgotten when she announces the scandal about Jeong Do. Their boss is thrilled; Ji Yeon can use as many pages as she wants. Other stories can wait. Team Leader Byun’ story, which was supposed to be featured, now needs more research . Her co-workers are already bitter, but Ji Yeon makes it worst when she bosses them around. Eun Chae needs to make sure the pictures for the article are high resolution, Reporter Nam should take care of her snack, etc.
Dong Ha and the children are still waiting in the lobby of Trouble Maker. Ji Yeon meets them and tells them that she technically didn’t steal the bike since she gave money for it. Dong Ha is furious. She didn’t even give time for the child to say anything before taking off on his bike. The children start calling out the bad ahjummah, but Ji Yeon insists that she is not an old lady. The children think she looks older than their sister though… Dong Ha asks for a compensation and apology.
Ji Yeon gives her business card; once they know the exact amount they can contact her. She also half bakes an apology and serves it to them…
Dong Ha: “What kind of apology is that?”
Ji Yeon: “You must have been annoyed earlier [to the kids], but later you will thank me. Thanks to me you are not being scammed. ”
Dong Ha grabs her. Who said they wanted to know her side of the story? The children encourage Santa to give them justice.
Ji Yeon “Do you guys really think he is Santa? There is no such thing as Santa.”
The children are shocked and heartbroken when Ji Yeon takes off the fake moustache and beard on Dong Ha’s face.
Dong Ha stops her when she is about to get in the elevator. Why did she do that? Those children are orphans who came all the way to Seoul to get those presents. OK, they shouldn’t believe in Santa but what about witches? Because he saw one today.
Ji Yeon hears her co-workers talking behind her back. Did they see her uniform today?! This was too much. Reporter Nam admits that she is not bad physically, but that’s not enough for someone to marry her. Reporter Nam would rather go to the army again then have something with her. Eun Chae adds that The Witch will never get married; there is no point talking about the obvious.
Ji Yeon reveals herself. She gets back to them by humiliating them or giving them extra work. Eun Chae’s White Day plans go down the drain while Team Leader Byun’s reporting skills are ridiculed.
Meanwhile Dong Ha brings back the children to their bus. The children are disappointed, but some are still grateful for the day. The woman in charge of the children is furious. How could Dong Ha pursue Ji Yeon with the kids? She thought they disappeared. Dong Ha doesn’t receive the money for the part-time job. Right after, he gets a phone call from his landlady. Rent is due today and since he is unable to pay he is kicked out.
Ji Yeon gets back to her empty apartment. Her mother left another voicemail. Ji Yeon’s mother is going to see a shaman and this time Ji Yeon has to listen to everything the shaman says. When will Ji Yeon get married? If this jerk hadn’t abandoned Ji Yeon, today would be their wedding anniversary… Hearing this voicemail worsens Ji Yeon’s mood. She blasts “You Don’t Love Me” by SPICA several times and starts dancing to it to her neighbor’s annoyance.
The neighbor is none other than Dong Ha’s friend Soo Chul. The two friends are complaining about Ji Yeon without knowing that they are talking about the same person. Soo Chul is annoyed by the noise while Dong Ha thinks about his day. Dong Ha will be staying at Soo Chul’s place for a few days.
Reporter Nam, Eun Chae, and Team Leader Byun are drowning their sorrow in soju when they start plotting revenge against The Witch.
Ji Yeon seems more affected than she thought about the harsh treatment she receives. She has a dream of her body being found in her apartment. The reporter covering the story, Dong Ha, explains to viewers that she died of loneliness. Dong Ha even jumps out of the TV screen and confronts her. Reality is not something she can avoid even if she is a witch…
Ji Yeon wakes up in sweats, but once she gets out of her apartment she feels better. Her article is out and it’s the talk of town. She is proud to see people reading about Jeong Do’s story.
Ji Yeon’s mother goes to see a shaman. The shaman explains that Ji Yeon’s problem isn’t marriage, but people that resent her.
Team Leader Byun and his accomplices hire someone to seduce Ji Yeon. The man hired is Soo Chul (OMG I see some complications coming).
During the team dinner/bar night, Soo Chul makes his move. He sends a drink to Ji Yeon, but the latter tells the waiter to return it. Eun Chae sees their plan falling in the water and tries to convince Ji Yeon that she should have taken the drink. Soo Chul then approaches their table and is invited to seat with them. He seduces Ji Yeon by flattering her ego. He knows all the fantastic articles she has written and is obviously a fan…
Ji Yeon’s ego is boosted (What a fool…) and she does a little dance in the restroom before returning to her table. Dong Ha, who met with Soo Chul in the bar, is shocked to learn that Soo Chul is getting paid to trick a woman. He is even more surprised when he recognizes Ji Yeon.
Dong Ha tries to convince Soo Chul to give up. Instead of listening Mr. Jerk takes Ji Yeon’s hand and confesses on stage. The bar organizes a game. The person with the best confession or proposal will win a prize.
Soo Chul: ” Ji Yeon, you’re the perfect woman I have been dreaming of.”
Ji Yeon is still on her little cloud. Everyone claims that the proposal is too weak, and the two should instead kiss. Mr. Jerk convinces Ji Yeon to close her eyes and start leaning for a kiss… Before closing her eyes, Ji Yeon remembers that March 15 has always been an unlucky day in her life, but that might change (Obviously not with this dude…).
Mr. Jerk stops and laughs out loud. He takes the mic from the MC. He really can’t kiss her. Looking up close, she really looks like an old woman. If Ji Yeon falls in the trap too quick, it’s not even fun. Mr. Jerk doesn’t even want the prize anymore. He jumps off stage and high fives Team Leader Byun.Ji Yeon is left on stage frozen (My heart aches for her. No one deserves this).
That’s when Dong Ha gets on stage and kisses her.
The drama is moving really fast. They already kissed and this is only episode 1!!!
Ji Yeon’s character is one of a successful career woman, who fails to find love and happiness. Her career is the only thing that boosts her ego therefore she puts extra effort. Her co-workers are unable to understand since they all have lives outside of work. For instance, Eun Chae – the young and pretty intern – had plans for White Day unlike Ji Yeon, who was meant to return to an empty apartment. Ji Yeon also has lost faith in humanity – love, dreams, etc. It’s not that she is heartless, but rather that she is trying to protect herself. That might partly be due to her age, the more people get older the less delusional they become.
As a woman, I was so hurt to see Soo Chul trick Ji Yeon. She might not be the best person, but no one deserves this. What is even more hurtful is the fact that she was publicly humiliated. To add insult to injury, Eun Chae – a fellow woman – is the main mastermind behind the evil plan. Eun Chae is so young and immature that she doesn’t realize that she could be in the same situation a few years down the road. It’s understandable that Ji Yeon’s co-workers are bitter. I probably would be too. She is their boss’ favorite, looks down on their abilities, and bosses them around. Yet, it’s still not enough for me to side with them.
Dong Ha’s character is more optimistic and bright. He doesn’t seem to old grudges. Despite him being evicted because of Ji Yeon he still rescues her on stage. Can’t wait to see those two interacting. I also wonder how Ji Yeon will feel when she realizes that Dong Ha’s friend is the one that tricked her. I hope she won’t misunderstand Dong Ha and think that he tried to trick her.
It’s important to remember that Ji Yeon is 39. Forty is the age at which women usually assess their lives. Family and co-workers have been putting a lot of pressure on Ji Yeon when it comes to marriage. Contrarily to Ji Yeon, Dong Ha is in his prime. He has life in front of him and hasn’t been through so much. The first episode gives clues about Ji Yeon’s previous relationship; she was ditched before her wedding. Was it a few days before? Was it in front of the altar? We will probably find out soon enough. I can’t wait to hear what excuse the guy who abandoned her has to give. Probably nothing convincing…
