The Greatest Marriage

2014-10-08 20.05.18 I am enjoying this drama and all its quirky characters! Plot Cha Ki Young, a successful anchorwoman, is enjoying a peaceful life until she starts a relationship with culinary reporter Park Tae Yeon. Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.02.48 PM Ki Young had everything going for her – career, looks, and money. The only thing she missed was the warmth of a man. From the beginning, it’s clear that Tae Yeon is just there to fill a void: Ki Young has no intention to have a husband. Things get more complicated when Tae Yeon gets attached and fails to give room to Ki Young. Plus, let’s add that that her female lead gets pregnant. Surprise, surprise! Not really actually… Ki Young and Tae Yeon had (unprotected) sex so often that it was only a matter of time. Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.13.26 PM Ki Young isn’t so sure what to do with the baby at first, but her first visit to the doctor helps her make up her mind. Hearing the baby’s heart beat is a revelation. Ki Young decides to keep it. How is the pregnancy going to affect Ki Young’s career as an anchorwoman? Especially, since her nemesis – Jo Eun Cha – is trying to make a comeback in the newsroom. Eun Cha had put his career as an anchor on a hold in order to pursue a political career. His political stint, which was mainly about his ambition to become an assemblyman, failed when he met Park Sun Nyeo. A one night stand between Sun Nyeo and Eun Cha creates a lot of bitterness between both. Eun Cha was just looking to have fun while Sun Nyeo completely trusted him with his feelings. She vows to turn his life into hell. Better believe her. Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.08.42 PM Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.08.48 PM Episode 1 Welcome to the world of Ki Young! We get to see how her female lead and Tae Yeon first met. Their first meeting is one of bickering and nasty glares especially from Ki Young. The relationship between Ki Young and Tae Yeon progresses really fast as the episode ends with Ki Young throwing up when delivering the evening news. We also get to meet Eun Cha and find out how his affair with Sun Nyeo marked the end of his political career. Eun Cha then decides to make a comeback in the newsroom but in order to do that he needs Ki Young’s green light. Episode 2 Ki Young confirms that she is pregnant. She goes from shocked to thrilled. At 35, this might be her only chance to have a baby. It doesn’t matter if Tae Yeon is on board or not. Tae Yeon panicks when he hears about the pregnancy, but quickly man up and promises to marry her. Needless to say that the first meeting between Tae Yeon’s parents and Ki Young is a disaster. Why is Ki Young wearing a mini skirt?! That is so inappropriate. By the way, she needs to quit her job ASAP before she thinks of marrying their Tae Yeon. Also how dare Ki Young calls Tae Yeon by his first name? Is this what her parents taught her??! Calling her prospective husband by his first name?! So ill-mannered… Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.18.01 PM Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.18.14 PM Meanwhile Sun Nyeo is doing everything to make Eun Cha jealous. She goes as far as to hire a fake husband… Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.17.24 PM A go getter Ki Young’s character is one that doesn’t back down. When she started as an anchorwoman, she was bullied by her sunbae, which was no other than Eun Cha. Eun Cha bullied her into respecting the hierarchy, newsroom structure, and how to be a pro. After Eun Cha left, she was able to increase viewership thanks to her news program. What I love about her is her INDEPENDENCE. It’s so rare to see a strong female lead. She isn’t obsessed about any man, but all about her career. The only thing she longs for is a child. Moral, money, and power A topic that comes back pretty often is corruption. In the newsroom, Ki Young is one of the few, not to say the only one, that doesn’t get influenced by those in position of power. When Eun Cha wants to regain a spot as a news anchor, he gets one of the company’s biggest sponsors to bribe Ki Young by giving her a journalism/reporting scholarship abroad. It turns out that the sponsor is none other than Tae Yeon’s father (Dramaland is such a small world…). As an anchorwoman, she seems to uphold her moral principles. I wonder how that’s going to play against her. I imagine her co-workers and viewers reaction when they found that she is pregnant: PRINCIPLED ANCHORWOMAN CHA KI YOUNG GETS PREGNANT OUT OF WEDLOCK! I anticipate the backlash and the boycott of Ki Young’s program. It’s a man’s world (*James Brown) Ki Young is a woman working in a man’s world. She had to be tough enough to compete with male co-workers such as Eun Cha. The newsroom is not the only place where she needs to act tough. Everyone and everything seems to remind her that she is a woman after all. The best example is when Ki Young first meets Tae Yeon’s parents.. No Min Woo I have only seen him act in Full House 2 and what a disaster that show was! From the embarrassing hairstyles to the messy/confusing plot line…. His character is a spoiled chaebol (What’s new?) with a skill for cooking. Tae Yeon is one of the most annoying chaebols I have seen, but I see some hope. The fact that he was able to stand up against his parents and choose his own path as a culinary reporter is a good sign. It means that he can and will fight for something that is worth it. Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.05.47 PM I haven’t talked about Hyun Myung Hi yet because I find her to be the most annoying character so far -___- She hasn’t done anything for the show so I don’t even know where her character is heading. She has just been this annoying and nosy intern that is willing to flirt with any single rich man. Screen Shot 2014-10-08 at 8.39.59 PM ~ maniac Ride
